Cross bracing is the diagonal positioning of struts, cables or ties in order to increase the strength of members of a structure. The diagonal elements are put in tension which is why steel cables are sometimes used in cross-bracing, whilst the vertical ones are most often in compression. In bridges, the purpose of bracing is most often to increase the torsional strength. This can be done through X-bracing, Channel bracing and K-type bracing to name few different types.
